How EPG Works with IPTV

IPTV providers deliver EPG data in one of two ways, depending on how you connect to the service:

Xtream Codes: EPG Built In

When you use Xtream Codes to connect — entering a server URL, username, and password — the EPG data is typically bundled with your credentials. The moment you add your login details to a player like TiviMate, the app automatically fetches the channel list, categories, VOD library, and EPG guide data from the server. You do not need to add a separate EPG URL. The guide populates in the background, usually within 30 seconds to two minutes depending on the size of the data.

M3U Playlist: Separate EPG URL

When you connect via an M3U playlist, the playlist file contains channel URLs and metadata but usually does not include the EPG data itself. Your provider gives you a separate EPG URL — a link to an XMLTV file — that you need to add manually in your player's EPG settings.

EPG with Xtream Codes

If you are using Xtream Codes — which is the connection method we recommend at Tvlio — setting up the EPG requires almost no effort. Here is what happens behind the scenes when you enter your credentials:

1. Player connects to the server using the server URL, username, and password you entered.
2. Channel list downloads — all available channels organized by category groups appear in the player.
3. EPG data downloads — programme listings for the next 7 days (or more, depending on the provider) are fetched in the background.
4. Guide merges with channels — the player matches EPG data to channels using unique channel IDs and displays the grid.

The first load can take 30 seconds to two minutes because the EPG data is large. Subsequent loads are much faster because the player caches the data locally and only fetches updates. If the guide appears blank after loading, give it a moment and pull down to refresh. The data is likely still indexing.

EPG with M3U Playlist

If you connected via an M3U playlist link instead of Xtream Codes, you need to add the EPG URL separately. Most providers send both the M3U URL and the EPG URL in their welcome message. Here is how it works:

1. Locate your EPG URL — check the welcome email or WhatsApp message from your provider. It is usually a separate link that ends in .xml or contains xmltv in the path.
2. Open your player's EPG settings — this varies by app but is usually under Settings → EPG or Settings → TV Guide.
3. Add the EPG source — choose XMLTV URL as the type, paste the EPG link, and confirm.
4. Wait for the download — the player fetches the guide data and merges it with your channel list.

The key detail is that the EPG URL and M3U URL are two separate things. The M3U playlist tells your player which channels exist. The EPG URL tells it what is playing on those channels. You need both for a complete experience.

Setting Up EPG in TiviMate

TiviMate is the most popular IPTV player on Android and Fire TV, and its EPG integration is one of the best. Here is the step-by-step process for adding an EPG source:

1. Open TiviMate on your device.
2. Go to Settings — press the gear icon on the left sidebar or navigate to Settings from the main menu.
3. Select EPG — this opens the EPG settings screen where you manage guide sources.
4. Tap "Add EPG source" — you will see an option to add a new XMLTV source.
5. Choose "XMLTV URL" as the source type.
6. Enter a name for the source — something like "Tvlio EPG" or "Provider Guide" helps if you ever add multiple sources.
7. Paste your EPG URL — this is the XMLTV link your provider gave you. Copy it exactly, including the protocol and any query parameters.
8. Tap "OK" to confirm. TiviMate will begin downloading the guide data immediately.
9. Wait for the download to complete. The first load can take one to two minutes for large EPG files. You will see a progress indicator in the EPG settings.
10. Verify the guide. Go back to the main screen, open the TV guide, and confirm that programme listings appear alongside your channels. If some channels show no data, the EPG IDs may not match — this is a provider-side issue.

Setting Up EPG in IPTV Smarters Pro

IPTV Smarters Pro handles EPG slightly differently from TiviMate. The process depends on whether you connected via Xtream Codes or M3U:

With Xtream Codes

If you added your playlist using Xtream Codes (server URL, username, password), the EPG loads automatically. No extra steps are needed. The player fetches guide data as part of the Xtream Codes login. Wait for the initial download to finish and the guide will appear on the home screen.

With M3U Playlist

If you connected via M3U URL, add the EPG source manually:

1. Open IPTV Smarters Pro.
2. Go to Settings from the main menu.
3. Select EPG or TV Guide depending on your version.
4. Tap "Add EPG" or "Add Source."
5. Enter a name for the EPG source.
6. Paste the EPG URL your provider gave you.
7. Tap "Add" or "Confirm." The app will start downloading the guide data.
8. Return to the main screen and open the TV Guide tab. The listings should now appear.

EPG Not Loading? Fix It

The EPG not showing is the most common support question we hear. Here are the most frequent causes and how to fix each one:

The quickest way to test whether your EPG URL is working is to paste it into a web browser. If the browser downloads an XML file, the URL is live. If you get a 404 error or a timeout, the URL is expired or the server is down — contact your provider for an updated link.

Custom EPG Sources

Most IPTV providers include an EPG with their service, but there are situations where you might want to use a third-party EPG source:

• Provider EPG is incomplete — some budget providers do not invest in accurate EPG data, leaving gaps in the guide.
• International channels — if your provider focuses on one region, you may need a separate EPG source for channels from other countries.
• Multiple playlists — if you combine channels from two providers, each may need its own EPG source.

Free EPG sources are available online. The most common format is XMLTV, which is a standard XML file containing programme listings. Popular free sources include community-maintained XMLTV dumps that aggregate guide data from public broadcast schedules. You can add these to any IPTV player by pasting the URL into the EPG source settings.

Keep in mind that free EPG sources have limitations. Coverage can be spotty for smaller channels, data may be delayed by a day or two, and some sources stop updating without notice. For the most reliable experience, use the EPG provided by your IPTV subscription — it is specifically mapped to their channel list and updated on their schedule.

When adding multiple EPG sources in TiviMate, the player merges data from all sources. Channels matched by ID get the most complete listings. Channels that do not match any EPG ID will show blank time slots.

EPG Tips

Once your EPG is working, these tips help you get the most out of it:

• Refresh regularly. Even with auto-refresh enabled, manually pulling down to refresh the guide occasionally ensures you have the latest data. This is especially important after your provider updates their channel list.
• Hide unused channels. A guide with 500 channels is overwhelming. Use your player's group settings to hide categories you never watch. This makes the EPG faster to navigate and easier to read.
• Customize the view. TiviMate lets you switch between grid view, list view, and channel-only view. Grid view works best for browsing; list view works better for scanning what is on across many channels at once.
